A lot has happened since I last posted! First and foremost, we wrapped production on Tuesday! It was a lot of fun to work on this production and I'm super grateful to work with these talented people! Below are some stills from later days :) Another big update is that I'm working very hard on editing! One of my favorite things is to color grade, which is when you have all the shots you wanted, and now you are adjusting the brightness and colors to be more aesthetic. For example, I finished editing scene 1 of Rusty's episode, and below I put the pictures of before and after color grading. Overall, I am mainly focused on editing for this project, and I hope to be done with it soon. I plan to have 'a dangerous night of editing' where I pull and all-nighter and see how far I can get through the project, and I'm excited because I've actually never pulled an all-nighter.

Filming on March 20thAll of these photos are from last Saturday! We had to finish up a scene with Lara and Parker, and we were going to film with Anna in the afternoon, but then she had to cancel, so we ended up finding this cool location under a bridge and filmed a separate scene with our two actors! It was lots of fun and we got a lot done, so I cannot wait to begin editing!
Lots of things have happened since my last post! Pre-ProductionOur goal was to be done writing and done with pre-production things by March 5th because we wanted to begin filming that weekend. During that final week, I focused on designing and sewing the costume for the parasite and finishing the three scripts, as well as preparing for our first filming days! Below are some of the pictures from my process of creating the costume, as well as the mask Juliet made and my sketch. There were plenty of difficulties, the main one being that we didn't have all the time in the world. I've never been much of a tailor, sewing is typically an activity that goes hand in hand with swearing, but I got the main layer down, and I think we're going to just go with the main frame. ProductionSATURDAY, MARCH 6th: There was a lot of intense light from the sun that I definitely had not been expecting, and when I planned out the shoot, I definitely did not expect to be as many bikers as there were. That threw a wrench in our plan, seeing for every 10 minutes, we'd only have about 2 minutes to shoot, because we wanted to allow bikers to pass. When filming, we used a new technique (for me)! So I typically use wider lenses that have a shallower focus, that means the background isn't a significant amount blurrier that what is in focus. It allows for shots to encompass more of the scene and be... well, wider. However, as you can probably see in the stills from the green way, the background is severely out of focus, and it makes the shot extremely clean. The downside of this beautiful shot was that it's super easy to walk out of focus, and the lense was much heavier. I did not have a steady hand, but Conner did, so he help the camera for basically the entire time we were at that location. SUNDAY, MARCH 7th: This was a chiller day, just me and Anna, the actress, and we did some morning montage stuff. Again, the lighting was just downright intense and created hot spots (areas where the camera couldn't pick up anything), so that will be fun for future Syd editing, but overall it was fine. I just wish I'd planned out the shots a little more because I feel like they weren't as pretty as they could be, but I just didn't know what else to do.
We worked a lot on location scouting, and we've decided on a few places, including the park by my house, my house, and Juliet's house. For writing, we've finished Rusty's script! Juliet and I are trying to also get a lot done on our other two episodes. Some other things we've been working on: -finish location scouting, including contacting different organizations (like the town of Cary) -casting for roles -scene design/prop list -character design Juliet and I are hoping to be done writing within the week so we can begin gathering supplies for production and planning dates for filming. We (Syd, David, Juliet, and Conner) have begun writing our project! The past two weeks, we have been focusing on two main parts of our production: pre-production and writing. Pre-production:This is where we put our brains together and determine the main goals, whether be artistic or not, that we have for this production. We've talked about possible filming locations, how we are going to get everything together, as well as our aesthetic that we are going for. Some images we have been using as part of our inspiration are down below. We narrowed down our types of production based on all of our experiences. One thing we all really wanted, was for this project to be really well done. The story might be vague, or unclear, but it would be hands down, beautiful, and creepy. We chose horror because that's where I had the most experience in (and out of everyone, we agreed I had the most experience with what we were doing). That being said, I am excited to work with the others, Juliet as a main producer and tying everything together, and Conner and David as our main special effects editors and composers. I think together we are going to create something simultaneously beautiful but unsettling. WRITING:This is where we are now; writing. Juliet and I are the main writers, and this is where a lot of our struggles have been recently. Our current goal is to finish writing by the end of the month because we want to start production and filming quickly so we can be more careful with editing.
For each episode, we have the general plan because they all tie into each other. Our main thing is making sure we have enough content in each episode while also being consistent with the overall story line. It's been a little difficult, just trying to think of words that sound normal, but also trying to think of the creative side. After this, we will begin editing, but also be finding our inspiration. Conner is going to be the Director of Photography, and planning a lot of our creative shots, and Juliet and I are going to be editing and preparing for filming. A goal I hope to accomplish in this class is to become more experienced in experimental styles of film, through cinematography, writing and editing, as well as learning how to create long term projects with peers. From Left to Right:
Pelican: I don't have many decorations in my house, but this is one of them. I got it at the beach and I just had an emotional connection to it when I saw it, so I thought to include it. Shell: That welk is one I've found at the beach. You can probably tell that I love the beach a little more than the average person. Bicycle Necklace: I got it in Richmond, Virginia. To me, it represents doing thing out of impulse and not being afraid to travel outside of your comfort zone, something that's important to me. Old Camera: This represents how much I love filmmaking, and how I'm going to pursue it in my future. Ring: Going back to the theme of the ocean, the ring has a ship on it that is being destroyed by the krakens on the sides. It's quite piratey, and I'd love for my aesthetic to be 'modern pirate'. I also love bringing the ring around with me in whatever I do just in case I decide to kick it, I will have it with me in the afterlife. Skull Statue: My style of art isn't completely pretty, I love having things that are also creepy, so I decided to put this in my picture to make it all a little less friendly. Dog Mask: This represents my history in performing. I played Nana in Peter Pan at my school, and I've been doing acting for years. It also is a little creepy, so I thought to incorporate it. Tin Knights: Why not? I love my metal figurines, I'd like to think they protect me. Pen and Quote: "The wind was particularly biting when Riley Holden Reede found himself at the rocky base of Lower Great Northdale's cliffs." This is one of the lines of the book I've been writing. I have been working on this project for so long, and I've been writing for even longer. Also, blue pens. Moon Painting: My sibling got this for me, and I love it very dearly. It just fit the vibe so I put it in. |
